Mexican Nativity made by hand with dry corn husks. The Angel, Virgin Mary and Joseph figures are 21 cm in height and about 20 in width. The animals are approximately 9cm in height and the angel's wings are approximately 11cm long.
Corn husks are one of the most sustainable materials to make crafts and artisan pieces. In Mexico they are used in many ways once they are removed from the corn. They are completely dried in the sun so no extra energy consumption is necessary nor do they require any further processing. Corn husks are lightweight and longlasting.
The Nativity pieces are crafted with patience by men and women in a small village in Guerrero, Mexico. Each crib takes over one week of work which begins by carefully choosing each corn husk, drying it, giving shape to each image and adding details like the angel's hair, which is made out of dry corn silk or 'hair'. These artisans master weaving techniques with both corn husks and palm leaves and make their living from these handicrafts.
This is a smaller version compared to the other Nativity we offer and also it is not dyed, made all in the natural color of corn husks.
It is a very authentic, charming and ecofriendly way to decorate your home, business or shop for the Christmas season.
